The Walled City

You can tell a lot about the history of an area and its status in Inca culture by the walls.

This wall was built in Cusco, the Inca capital. You can tell the area was inhabited by the elites of society because the stones are so closely fitted and smooth.

In less auspicious parts of the city, and the countryside, the walls made in areas inhabited by average families are loosely stacked. More like a fieldstone wall. In either case, no mortar was used just geometry.
