Maras Salt Ponds

For hundreds of years salt has been produced in Peru at the Maras salt ponds about an hour from Cusco in south central Peru.

Several types of salt are produced here as the water evaporates and the salt is left behind. Some of it is edible and some of it is used for other purposes. This method of salt production was engineering during the Inca period and has continued to this day in the same location. The same family owns much of the property
