Peron

I was not thinking of her as I sat in the back of a taxi being driven from the airport to my hotel in Buenos Aires after arriving from Santiago, Chile.

As the car turned on Avenida 9 de Julio, I saw the large iron sculpture mounted on the side of one of the tallest buildings in the center of the city. It is not her face I recognized at first, it was the 1940s style microphone, the way she held it, her lips, the way her hair was pulled back and pinned with flowers.

Is that Evita Peron? My hotel was just a few blocks away and after check in I went on line to find out. Yes, the sculpture on the side of the Ministry of Public Works is a likeness of the the former First Lady of Argentina, who is still beloved in the country today, almost seventy years after her death.

Now I knew I was in Argentina.
