The current government of Chile, led by President Sebastian Pinera, is seen by many international observers as a model for reform.

The people of Chile however have a different view. They believe most of the changes the Pinera government have made to improve the economy have benefited the rich and have failed to lift up the average family.

This disparity led to a major protest movement that began last fall and continues today.

In some ways, this photo taken in central Santiago illustrates how life can look just fine on the inside, but quite different outside your window where daily life is a struggle. The night I took this photo I found an effigy of President Pinera hanging from a traffic signal a few blocks away.
