As it tries to manage the Coronavirus, Chile is also trying to manage almost a full year of political turmoil, brought on by a reaction to the disparity between rich and poor in the country.

The issues are most evident in the capital of Santiago where daily protests for reform began last fall. Tourists are advised to avoid certain areas at night because of the possibility of political violence. Protest banners and graffiti cover almost every square inch of the city.

This poster, depicting Gladys Marin, a political reformer who died in 2005 of cancer, is ubiquitous. Fifteen years after her death her example as a fighter for government reform is still viewed as an inspiration to the protestors of today who vow to “fight like Gladys.”
