Machu Picchu

Every day they uncover a bit more of Machu Picchu.

Although what is visible today is impressive enough, there’s more under the jungle around the edges. Most photos of the Inca site are taken from above, because a wide angle view shows the entire mass of the site, but looking up close you can better understand how difficult the task of building would have been.

It was built in the 1400’s but abandoned when the Spanish invaded the area that today is modern Peru. For more than 400 years it was known only to people who lived nearby until it was re-discovered by an American explorer and researcher from Connecticut.

As you stand on the ridge line overlooking the ancient city you might ask yourself, why here? Machu Picchu feels like the middle of no where even today. Why all the labor and toil to build a city in the Andean highlands?

The best answer anyone can offer is an abundant clean water supply.
