Planning and Zoning

Hanoi has been the capital of Vietnam - or parts of it - for more than 1,000 years.

The architecture is a jumble. There is not one square inch that hasn’t been put to use. If there is a plan to any of it; it is not immediately apparent. In fact, as you walk the streets and happen upon construction projects here or there, for the most part it looks as if wherever there is a vacant spot someone just fills it in. Makes it fit.

You really get the sense from street level, but this shot from overhead captures the patchwork of buildings as well.
