Morning Routine, Afternoon Meeting

(Short New York Story)

A few blocks from here history is being made, but for her it is of no concern. She trusts justice will be done.

She is most concerned about her meeting later this afternoon. She has been pushing the new sales concept for months and it will boil down to one hour in a corner conference room above the city. Really, it will all depend on the first ten minutes of the meeting, because that’s where she will make the sale, or not.

She relaxes before the meeting by sticking to her routine. Instead of a window seat inside, this morning’s weather allows her to sit outside across from the sidewalk service window. Others pass by and she wonders whether they face any challenge like the one she is facing today. Is she alone in this struggle, or is it the same for everyone? No one makes eye contact. They pass looking straight ahead or down at their phone. What will be the most important ten minutes of their day?
