Acadia - Black and White
Acadia National Park, and the top of Cadillac Mountain in particular, is one of several places in Maine that claim to be the first place the sun shines on the east coast of the United States at different times of the year.
On the morning I was there, clouds covered the region so I did not see the full sunrise.
But as you may know, even on a cloudy day, the sun has a tendency to burst through, at least for a few minutes, at the horizon - and that’s what happened this morning.
Acadia takes up most of Mt. Desert Island, the second largest island on the east coast after Manhattan. The two places could not be more different. Here nature rules. In Manhattan, man has temporary custody.
The landscape includes seashore, rocky coastline, fresh water lakes, and thick forest.
As big as it is, it is almost a secret compared with other more popular national parks.
But that’s one more reason to see it on your own especially just before or just after the summer season.
