Arriving a few days after the riot at the U.S. Capitol, I was unprepared, shocked and saddened to see how four years of the Trump administration had turned Washington, D.C. into a city that looked as if it was preparing for a hurricane.

The weekend I was there, new barricades were going up in the response to the January 6 insurrection, but it was also obvious many of the street blockades and boarded up businesses had been that way for months, because of the tensions created by a president intent on pitting Americans against each other.
