Hashbury

This is the street corner that gives the neighborhood its name.

The Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco where the hippie counter culture grew and thrived in the 1960’s. By the early ’70’s the neighborhood fell into decline, but by the ’80’s it was becoming the time warped living museum it is today.

Here you will find a mix of locals and tourists. There is also a sub-group of mostly people in their 20’s who for some reason are drawn to the hippie lifestyle they have read about. They are intent on re-creating it for themselves more than 50 years later.

They should know, and maybe they do, the movement was unsustainable for most participants.
