A Little Help Is Easy to Give

Back in 2019, I covered a campaign event by California Senator Kamala Harris(D) in Keene, New Hampshire.

She was still running for the Democratic nomination for president. In the front row was a young girl who was hoping to ask Harris a personal question after the event. The girl was nervous. She had to give a speech to her class in a few days and she was hoping for Harris’s expert advice on public speaking.

She waited. She asked her question. And to the girl’s surprise, Harris took the time to talk to her and put her at ease. “Be yourself,” Harris said. “Show them who you are and your authenticity will come through.”

The young girl clearly could not believe a U.S. Senator would listen to her and try to help her. When the exchange was over there was a big smile and a heart-felt hug.
