Can Tho

There are plenty of markets in tourist locations around the world that may have started out as true local markets, but at some point turned into tourist attractions.

This does not appear to be the case in the Mekong Delta town of Can Tho. This market, about a half mile in length, appeared to cater mostly to locals who were buying fish caught that day in the nearby river.

This man was selling what can only be described as jumbo shrimp. He was just setting them out when I took this picture and he was calling out to potential customers who were not listening at first.

While in Vietnam, as a photographer, I felt comfortably ignored most of the time even at close range, but there were also moments when I could tell my subjects were joking with each other about the tourist who thinks what “we are doing is exciting or exotic.” I got it and laughed with them. It’s just their life and they think there’s nothing special about it from their perspective.
